The program aims to enhance and strengthen the bond between mother and child during their period of unavoidable separation. Babies Beyond Bars offers ongoing prenatal and postnatal breastfeeding resources, support, and education to incarcerated mothers who wish to provide breastmilk to their infant.
Evidence shows that women who provide breastmilk to their babies while incarcerated have greatly improved outcomes including reduced recidivism and stronger family bonds along with a stronger sense of responsibility.

Babies Beyond Bars is a non-profit project designed to support incarcerated mothers by providing Professional Lactation services during the prenatal and postnatal period. This program is designed by International Board Certified Lactation professionals.

We are a team of passionate and skilled lactation specialists and birth doulas who provide compassion and expertise to mothers and babies who are living through forced separation due to incarceration. Babies Beyond Bars operates as a nonprofit program designed to provide incarcerated mothers in Montana’s correctional facilities the opportunity to nurture and strengthen the mother-child bond through birth and breastfeeding. Babies Beyond Bars will provide prenatal and postnatal pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding support, education, and resources, as well as breastmilk transport for incarcerated mothers and their babies.
Babies Beyond Bars operates within The Family Tree Center framework, but it does not receive financial support from the organization. Babies Beyond Bars relies on your direct donations.
Your donation will purchase breast pumps and lactation supplies, cover the high cost of shipping breastmilk and provide childbirth and lactation education & support for mothers and babies.
